How To Make Gold Edible Confetti!!

Recently I was asked by one of my long time clients to make a trio cakes for her beautiful birthday sweet table. She wanted to have a main navy blue cake with some hot pink decorations and two little ones with the same color combo This blue is so trendy  and make the table super beautiful as the hot pink make a beautiful contrast!! . She thought in one of my cakes from my second Craftsy class and I loved the idea of transforming the design with these new color combination, which I absolutely looove!!!

I thought in making the small cakes very simple, keeping the same line as the main one. I opted to decorate one with some gold edible confetti and little sugar flowers and the other one with some chocolate dripping painted in gold.

There are different ways to make these confetti or sequins. The most common is to make fondant cut outs and paint them with gold but I find it very messy and takes forever. Kara has also a different technique making them with gelatin if you want to check it out. As I am always run out of time, I thought in something more simple and fast, so I came out with this idea:

You will need to have:

  1. One sheet of wafer paper

  2. Edible gold leaf

  3. Small circle puncher

  4. Piping gel

  5. Paintbrush

I apply piping gel to the wafer paper sheet section that I want to cover with gold leaf. Make sure that all the surface is well coated without any gap.

I put the gold leaf on top of the wafer paper making sure that is  in the section coated with piping gel

I peel off the gold leaf very carefully

And here we have a super shinny gold wafer paper!!

Now the only thing that we have to do is cut the confetti with one puncher. I used a school one but you can find those more crafty that sell with different sizes, but remember that confetti is small.

Once you have all the confetti or sequins ready,  you just need to attach them to the cake adding a little pipping gel to the back of the pieces with a paintbrush.

One of the cakes that I made for the 23rd was a jewelry cake. This is not a tutorial but I wanted to show you how to make a beautiful ornament cake with no tools.

goldenmultiloop

Jaya wants to have a cake for a holiday celebration inspire by one ornament. I don't know the meaning but it was beautiful. So I decided to make it from "scratch" with almost no tools but my hands.

step1

I wanted to have a dark blue fondant color so I started with a light blue fondant covered cake and decided to hand paint it with a brush. You could also airbrush which is very fast and it covers the cake really good but I don't know why but lately I prefer to use the brushes than airbrushing, I like the little strokes of the brush and you can still see some of the color behind.

step2

I mixed the navy blue of Americolor with a drop of black also from Americolor with some drops of High ratio of alcohol vodka, and then I painted over the cake.

step3

I use a small brush to give a first coat and then I repaint ut with a big brush wet in alcohol. I waited to have it dry and then I added a second coat. You can repeat this process until get the intensity desired.

step4

I let the cake dry overnight to start building the ornament. I started with the center. I use a small brooch that I had and made my own mold (I will have to post about this which is very easy and super useful). For the center I used a small decorative crystal which is the only thing non edible of the cake.

19-Discs-Craft-Cake-Sculpture-Cake-Decorating-Supply-Pottery-Clay-Fimo-ExtruderThe whole ornament is made by hand but I suggest you to use the extruder tool. I have to say that I don't like when I have to use these kind of tools, I don't find any of them really easy to use, but between the all bad ones if I would have to pick one maybe this one would be the less bad one.

step5

I took the center as a reference and start building the out layers of the ornament. As you can see I alternated the little fondant balls with the little long cut sausages of fondant.

step6

When I reach this layer I used this little silver decorations with the silver dragues that comes in different sizes

I always have them because I find them very useful in the decorations using in limited amounts.

step7

The out layer of the ornament is formed with little petals cut in half.

step8

And to finish the ornament bigger hand made petals very easy to make, starting from a ball of fondant that I thin it in the palm of my hand and pinch in the center to create that fold.

step9

Finally I hand paint all the ornament with this gold luster mixture that consist in edible gold luster with pearl luster all diluted in lemon extract or vodka. Make that mixture paintable and with a thin paintbrush go ahead and paint every single detail of the ornament.

For the snowflakes I used the snowflake cutter than comes with a beautiful texture and I added randomly in the dark blue fondant.

Finally to finish my cake nothing better than a golden beautiful brooch that is my beautiful bow that comes in my new Craftsy Class: Cakes with Style.
